Tulane’s McMillan, Memphis; Huff, SMU’s Sanders are weekly award winners in the American

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly football honors for the first week of the 2019 college football season.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Justin McMillan • Tulane • Sr. • QB • Cedar Hill, Texas

McMillan threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-18 passing (77.8 percent) and rushed for 51 yards and a TD to lead a Green Wave offense that reeled off 545 yards and scored touchdowns on six of McMillan’s nine series in a 42-12 win against Florida International. McMillan improved to 6-1 as Tulane’s starting quarterback.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Bryce Huff • Memphis • Sr. • DE • Mobile, Ala.

Huff had five tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss and sack that produced a key safety in Memphis’ win against Ole Miss. Huff led a Tiger defense that limited the Rebels to 173 total yards, while his safety came with 6:27 left in the fourth quarter, giving Memphis a 15-10 lead that stood as the winning margin.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CJ Sanders • SMU • Sr. • WR • Granada Hills, Calif.

Sanders delivered what might have been the biggest play of SMU’s 37-30 win against Arkansas State as his 98-yard kickoff return came after the Red Wolves had taken a 23-16 lead in the third quarter.

HONOR ROLL

Michael Warren II • Cincinnati • Jr. • RB

Rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown and had three catches for 27 yards and a TD in a 24-14 win against UCLA.

D’Eriq King • Houston • Sr. • QB

Rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown and had two passing TDs in a 49-31 loss at No. 4 Oklahoma.

Patrick Taylor Jr. • Memphis • Jr. • RB

Rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries in a 15-10 win against Ole Miss. Added four catches for 25 yards. 

Xavier Jones • SMU • Sr. • RB

Rushed for 56 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries in a 37-30 win at Arkansas State.

Anthony Russo • Temple • Jr. • QB

Completed 32 of 41 passes for 409 yards and four touchdowns in a 56-12 win against Bucknell.
