Is The Players Better Than The Masters?

A unique take on the Players Championship

Thursday marks the beginning of the Players Championship for 2018, the final time the event will be held in May and a golf tournament that stands out on the schedule.  Some have called it the “fifth major,” and Sports Talk 1040’s own Erik Kuselias suggests that maybe that label just makes Florida’s golf crown jewel look a bit minor.

Erik welcomed on Sports Talk Florida’s Tim Williams to talk about the upcoming tournament, and Williams suggested that the event at TPC Sawgrass is everything The Masters wants to be without the unnecessary pomp and circumstance.  The course is one of the world’s most recognizable, having been a mainstay of television golf coverage and video games about the game since it came to host The Players.

Tim also talks to Erik about things to watch for in the tournament.  The Players is often a launchpad for a golfer who hasn’t won a major yet to learn how to win one of the big tournaments, as we’ve seen with Sergio Garcia in the past.  Hideki Matsuyama and Rickie Fowler have both yet to win a major, do either of them fit the profile?

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson loom large, especially as they will be paired together on Thursday and Friday.  Tiger is looking healthier and healthier, but is he ready for the next step in his comeback?  Erik and Tim discuss.
