Mike Carey, an NFL ref for 19 seasons, hasn’t worked a Washington game since September 2006 because of the racist name, he tells Mike Wise of the Washington Post. Around 2006 he specifically requested to not be assigned to their games. He now works for CBS as the rules analyst.
“The league respectfully honored my request not to officiate Washington,” Carey told Mike Wise of the Washington Post. “It happened sometime after I refereed their playoff game in 2006, I think.”
“It just became clear to me that to be in the middle of the field, where something disrespectful is happening, was probably not the best thing for me,” Carey said.
This whole column is worth the read. Carey has a lot to say that would get people thinking.
