Qatar’s World Cup Problems Worsen

Qatar will host the 2022 World Cup but the event will be much smaller in scale than originally anticipated.

In May, 2015, there was a question. Does it really matter if Sepp Blatter is re-elected as president of international football or soccer’s governing body, FIFA? The organization was  facing a day of reckoning. After 14 individuals connected to the group were arrested by United States law officials, FIFA has no choice but to clean house.

It was a little late but FIFA has cut loose 11 of the people who were arrested on bribery and corruption charges. It was the first step that FIFA took after the United States officials nabbed the 14 individuals who apparently had been practicing illegal transactions according to the authorities for the better part of two decades. The sitting president  Blatter had been in power for 17 years and made the group money but all along there were whispers of corruption. Some of it came out following the awarding of the World Cup to Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022. There was talk that bribes were given to FIFA members to give Russia and Qatar the events. The US officials are alleging the something happened which allowed South Africa to get the 2010 World Cup and there many have been some money that changed hands during the 2011 selection of a FIFA president.

Blatter’s tenure ended in 2016. Some of the players in the FIFA scandal ended up in jail. Qatar is hosting the 2022 World Cup.
