College football remains enormously popular and that might grow as more states get into the legalized gambling game. Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey are up and going, West Virginia will start soon followed by Mississippi and Pennsylvania.
The July numbers are in from sports betting in New Jersey. Three casinos and two racetracks took more than $40 million in bets. Overall, $57 million has been wagered in the Garden State from June 14, when sports betting started in New Jersey, through July 31.
It probably should come as no surprise that the National Basketball Association Commissioner Adam Silver has signed a deal with the Las Vegas-based MGM Grand Hotel, which is also a sports betting casino that allows the hotel to become the Official Data Partner of the NBA.
Sportsbooks have opened in Delaware and New Jersey is slowly expanding the availability of sports betting with another Atlantic City hotel offering the service starting on June 28 and the promise of sports betting at the Meadowlands racetrack about seven miles from midtown Manhattan by July 15th.
Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, Major League Soccer and the National Basketball Association do business in Canada and now the leagues have a new problem facing them.
The NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights franchise will be joined by the NFL’s Mark Davis Raiders in two years, the NBA has a summer development league in town and Major League Baseball might be interested in at least kicking the tires and take a look at the city in the event there is an expansion or relocation opportunity in the future.

It took nine years but as of Tuesday afternoon at 1:30, three casinos at racetracks in Delaware will open sports betting parlors. In 2009, Delaware elected officials passed legislation that would allow the race track casinos to operate a sports book which would have greatly expanded Delaware’s sports betting operation.
The reality has set in. There will be no turning back and the sports world in the United States is going to have to adjust to what most of the other sports operators in the world have understood for decades. There is gambling on sports and there is nothing you can do, so embrace it.
The National Football League plans to lobby Congress to come up with some sort of framework to perhaps regulate sports betting although it is not exactly clear what Congress can do to give the NFL want it wants. In fact, it appears the NFL doesn’t know what it wants except to protect the integrity of the NFL.
