USA continued to add to its medal count as it collected the gold medal in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay. The team of Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer and Townley Haas helped USA continue its dominance in the event, winning gold since 2000.
Dwyer started for USA and kept his team in medal contention throughout his swim. After his first turn, USA was in third and then in second after his second turn. After his third turn, USA took the lead and did not look back. As Haas dived into the pool, he expanded USA’s lead by pacing himself far ahead of the rest of the competition. It was then up to Lochte to maintain USA’s lead and he did just that. Michael Phelps then brought his team to victory as USA finished with an official time of 7:00:66 to win the gold medal.
This was the fourth straight victory in this event for Phelps and Lochte. Phelps now has an Olympic record 25 medals including 21 gold and became the first Olympian in history to win multiple gold medals in four Olympic events. Ryan Lochte now has 12 Olympic medals including six gold. Dwyer took gold for the second time in his Olympic career while Haas won his first ever Olympic medal.
