It’s been an eventful past couple of weeks in Gainesville for the Florida Gators. On Monday Randy Shannon stepped in as interim head coach to replace Jim McElwain and was already making drastic changes. But while Shannon is switching it up in the Swamp, the question remains, who will be Florida’s next head coach?
Mark McLeod of The Gator Blitz joined Erik Kuselias to give some insight into who the Gators are targeting and what exactly happened in McElwain’s downward spiral.
“In my opinion, it was borderline insubordination,” remarked McLeod. “I mean he goes out, without being asked, in the Monday (10/23/17) press conference and said that he’d received death threats, but when asked about it he declined to comment on it any further.”
When the school, who was unaware of these threats, pressed the former coach about these threats he failed to give any further insight and provide proof.
“We in the media just think he was looking for some pity,” said McLeod. “Because he didn’t provide anything to them (administration), he didn’t go to law enforcement; he didn’t go to his boss, which is the first place he should’ve gone.”
McLeod explained he believes McElwain was merely looking for a way out as his relationship with Florida was at the point of boiling over. It was known that the school was looking for a way out with the coach as well. Though it’s never ideal to have this type of fallout over halfway through a season, it’s not the worst thing for the Gators at this point.
“The good part about Florida’s schedule right now is they are in the portion of it where they can win some games,” said McLeod. “Right now with Randy Shannon, certainly all of the players have a lot of respect for him and a lot of love for him.”
As of now, Shannon has already made changes at quarterback and in the coaching staff, but Florida is still looking to bring in a new head coach. Many are pointing fingers towards UCF’s Scott Frost and Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen.
“I would be surprised if Scott Frost, UCF, wasn’t a guy that maybe they (Florida) tries to target,” said McLeod. “Boosters have said they have thrown in Charlie Strong’s name from USF, you’ve heard Mike Norvell from Memphis, Matt Campbell a little bit from Iowa State, and of course Bob Stoops (former Oklahoma head coach).
McLeod mentioned he doesn’t see any chance of Shannon getting the gig and believes Scott Stricklin, Florida’s Athletic Director, is going outside for this one.
