GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Gators (18-11, 9-7 SEC) get much needed win against No. 12 Auburn at home, 72-66.
Florida played at a high level throughout the entire game, leading by 14 at one point. Auburn’s largest least, only 2 points.
A big part of the great night for Florida, KeVaughn Allen who scored 24 points. His biggest bucket, a 65-foot shot going into halftime.
“We needed that one, didn’t we? Wow” said Head Coach Mike White.
“Huge. It was a big momentum shot for us; guys were fired up going into the locker room. He made something out of nothing, so we obviously needed it.”
Coach White said it felt good to have Allen shooting the ball and scoring again, he said that leads to big wins like this one.
“I was really proud that he remained aggressive. He had a meeting with a couple of his teammates that he’s really close with and they encouraged him and challenged him at the same time because when he’s aggressive, other guys gain confidence, whether they’re going in or not. He’s an electric scorer, one of a few guys that can start 0-5 and hit his next six, he can really fill it up” said White.
That aggression and team support is what Allen says motivated him Saturday night.
“I was pretty confident tonight. I made a few shots and it just got me going. Coach White always tells me to stay aggressive and keep shooting no matter what happens” said Allen.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Florida, and they only have two regular season games left.
“We needed this coming off of a losing streak. We aren’t looking too far ahead but we are going out trying to win every game. We have had some games this year where we couldn’t finish the game off at the end but today we did a good job and played confident tonight” said Guard Chris Chiozza
Next up for Florida, Alabama and Kentucky. Two teams they must beat going into the SEC Tournament.
“Everybody shot well tonight and we wish we were capable of doing that every game. When we play hard, anything can happen” said Chiozza.
