Nick Saban is the best head coach in college football hands down

Alabama head coach Nick Saban is the best college football coach of the modern era

Tonight at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, it is going to be Clemson taking on Alabama in a rematch of the last year’s Playoff Championship. Alabama head coach Nick Saban, is out to win his sixth national championship, and to establish himself as the best college football coach in the modern era.

The Alabama coach has won five national championships — four at Tuscaloosa; one at LSU — including three in the past five years. Alabama has not lost more than one SEC game in a season since 2010. It has won 30 of its last 33 games overall. It is, again, the top-ranked team in the country.

MUST READ: The coaches talk to the media

OK, Ohio State’s Urban Meyer, owner of three national championship rings, two while the head coach at Florida and one while as the head coach of the Buckeyes. For those who want to put him in the best-coach conversation be my guest.

However, make no mistake about it every other coach is fighting for No. 3 on the ladder.

When it comes to No. 1, the discussion begins and ends with the Alabama head coach.

As a live long University of Florida fan who started attending Gators games as a small child in the 1960’s. It gives me no pleasure to state that Saban is the best coach in college football, but his is and that is simply a fact.

Like his former boss Bill” Belichick, who was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns and Saban was his defensive coordinator, he has a crazy work ethic.

Case in point Eli Gold the voice of The Crimson Tide and a former colleague of mine told me this story. the morning after Alabama won the national title in 2012, Saban was on the phone with a golfing buddy back in Tuscaloosa. The friend offered congratulations. Saban lamented. “That damn game cost me a week of recruiting,” he replied.

Saban, is without question the best recruiter in all of college football and if he targets a kid he wants to play for him at Alabama, he normally gets him.

Case in point The Crimson Tide, has had the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class in five of the past six years — 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016. It finished second in 2015. No doubt Saban was not pleased in 2015.

Saban now has four national titles at Alabama and is closing in on legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s record six national championships.

When you consider how tough the SEC has been during its run of eight national championships in 10 years, the fact that Saban was able to win four of those in just seven years is incredibly impressive. Also, Saban’s teams have played at least six games against ranked opponents in each of those championship years.

So, to me Saban is the best head coach in college football and win or lose tonight will keep the title.
