Road sweet Road for Knights

Road sweet Road for the Knights, The Knights started a 2 game road trip this past weekend knowing if they win final 2 games on the road they will get the right to host C-USA championship game on December 4th. Mission one accomplished as UCF from opening kickoff put Southern Miss game a distant memory on their way to blowing out the Tulane Green Wave 61-14 at the superdome in New Orleans.

Sophomore Quincy McDuffie returned the opening kickoff 95 yards  for a touchdown which set the tone for the game as Knights never look back in the game scoring a school record for most  in a quarter  with 31 points in the first quarter. For McDuffie it’s his 2nd kick return for a TD this season and he is averaging 33.5 per kick return on the season which ranks him 2nd in the nation behind only William Powell of Kansas State who at 34.57.

The kick return game has set up the offense all season with good field positions and help set the tone. Saturday was no different as UCF played a complete game as the offense was clicking once again with freshman quarterback Jeff Godfrey throwing touchdown passes to McDuffie in 1st quarter along with a 60 yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Kamar Aiken early in the 2nd quarter that pushed the Knights lead to 38-0. Godfrey ended up with 2 touchdown passes and 2 touchdowns on the run on the day. The Knights ran for 282 yards on the day.

Next up for Knights is what they hope is the first of two trips to Liberty Bowl in next month with the first this Saturday to take on the Memphis Tigers who are 1-10 this season with only coming out of conference against Middle Tennessee State on September 18. A win clinches the division title and home field for C-USA Championship and a perfect road record in conference for the Knights which they have never accomplished since joining C-USA. This season the Knights are a bad 4th quarter in Manhattan, Kansas away from an undefeated road record for the season.  UCF have outscored their opponents on the road this season  by an average of 15 points and in the 4 road wins this season the Knights have won each game by double digit points except for the win in Houston where they won by 7.  So it is only fitting that the Knights have a chance to clinch division and home field advantage in conference title game by winning on the road this Saturday in Memphis, where the Knights hope to return on New Year’s Eve.

News and Notes

–          UCF may already know its opponent for title game and possibly clinched division by then. A Southern Miss lost on Friday at Tulsa clinches division for UCF.

–          SMU win at East Carolina on Friday clinches West Division for SMU or a loss by Tulsa against So Miss. Tulsa needs a SMU loss and a win over So Miss to win the West

–          UCF has outscored teams in the first quarter this season 117-20; in contrast Memphis has been outscored 117-35 in first quarter this season.

–          Congratulations to UCF’s Men’s Soccer Coach Bryan Cunningham and the Knights who had a great season hosting a 1st round NCAA Tournament game for first time in school history beating USF 3-0 on Thursday. The  Knights would lose a heartbreaker on Sunday at  Ann Arbor against 10th nationally seeded Michigan 2-1 in Overtime, still UCF finished the season 12-5-3 and made NCAA Tournament for first time since 2004.
