USF Clinches Ninth Win Of The Season

The USF Bulls Tie The Program Season Wins Record With Ninth Win

It was another game that had Bulls fans wondering if USF was going to hold on or blow their lead, but South Florida did exactly what they’ve been doing, they won. USF (9-2, 6-1) beat the SMU Mustangs (5-6, 3-4) 35-27 to clinch their ninth win of the season.

The game opened up in normal USF fashion as Quinton Flowers found Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a 77-yard touchdown. The Bulls continued with that on the second drive of the game as Marlon Mack found the end zone with a 60-yard run.

With those 60 yards Mack moved into the number 10 spot on Florida’s all-time rushing list. He also tied Flowers and Andre Hall for the season rushing touchdown school record.

The first quarter would come to an end with the Bulls leading 14-7, but SMU would answer back in the second quarter to tie the game. USF couldn’t get anything rolling to answer back on the offense side of the ball, but the defense came up big for the Bulls.

With 2:21 left in the first half a SMU fumble would give the Bulls great field position for a quick one play touchdown drive, their second of the night.

The second half saw more records getting broke by the Gulf Coast Offense. Flowers passed Matt Grothe’s single-season USF record of 3,542 total yards after a 65-yard touchdown pass to Tyre McCants.

The Bulls would have three one-play touchdown drives throughout the night. That would be the only score for the Bulls in the third quarter, but SMU would see two scoring drives.

Both teams would have one scoring drive each in the fourth quarter to end the game.

It Wasn’t All Offense Winning This Game

For weeks the Bull Shark defense has been scrutinized for giving up points and missing tackles. However, the defense came up with huge stops to help the Gulf Coast Offense seal this game away.

Auggie Sanchez was a force to be reckoned with for Ben Hicks and the SMU offense. With 14 total tackles, the middle linebacker led the team in tackles tonight and stopped a crucial 4th and 1 in the final two minutes of play.

Sanchez wasn’t alone. Last week Deatrick Nichols found himself with a big game against Memphis with a pick off Riley Ferguson. Tonight Nichols furthered his team lead of interceptions as he picked off the SMU offense twice. He now has eight career interceptions.

More Records Being Broke

As Mack and Flowers ran into more record books tonight Willie Taggart saw a new record of his own. The Bulls set a new season scoring record tonight breaking the mark of 451 points set in 2007.

Mack and Flowers had another 100-yard rushing game each for the fourth time this year.

The Bulls extend their nation-leading streak of 30+ point scoring games to 15.

With tonights win the Bulls tie the season wins record, but next weekend they will look to break that record with a tenth season win over UCF.
