USF To Play South Carolina In The Birmingham Bowl

USF To Make Eighth Bowl Appearance In Birmingham Bowl

It’s Selection Sunday and the South Florida Bulls are heading to the Birmingham Bowl at Legion Field. The 25th-ranked Bulls will face South Carolina (6-6) on Dec. 29th at 2 p.m.

“This is a great opportunity for our program to go out and show the country what we are all about and add another significant victory to a record-breaking season,” Bulls coach Willie Taggart said in a statement released by USF to the Tampa Bay Times.

This will be the eighth bowl appearance for USF after playing in the Miami Beach Bowl last season. The Bulls are 4-3 in bowl games with wins at the PapaJohns.com Bowl (2006), St. Petersburg Bowl (2008), International Bowl (2009) and Meineke Car Care Bowl (2010).

USF has made one prior appearance in the Birmingham, AL where they defeated East Carolina 24-7 in the Papajohns.com Bowl on Dec. 23, 2006.

USF is 1-5 all-time against SEC teams. The Bulls’ lone win came in 2007 when Matt Grothe led the Bulls to a 26-23 overtime triumph at Auburn. USF and South Carolina have only met once, in which the Bulls fell 34-3 in Columbia in 2004.

“We wanted to make going to bowl games a regular occurrence again at South Florida, so it’s great to be returning to a bowl for a second straight season and have the opportunity to play an SEC opponent in Birmingham.”
