Marlins Win 4-0, Sweep Diamondbacks

That’s a whole lot of zero’s. Marlins pitcher Adam Conley pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings as the Marlins defeated the Diamondbacks 4-0, completing the three-game series sweep. Conley gave up just two hits, a walk while striking out six batters.

In his last start, Conley allowed no hits in 7 2/3 shutout innings. Now carry that over to today’s three hitless innings and you have a yourself a streak of 11 1/3 innings of hitless frames: a new club record for a starter.

“He’s just been on a mission to be something,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. “Now it’s early, it’s a long year and there’s a ways to go but obviously we’re seeing signs that this kid…could  be something special.”

marlins_aj_ramos_2014_2Miami’s bullpen did their part as well. For the third consecutive night, Arizona didn’t have an answer. It took four relievers to close out the five-hitter with A.J. Ramos pitching in the ninth. He lowered his ERA to 0.73 as the bullpen collectively pitched 10 2/3 shutout innings in this series.

The Marlins have been on a bit of a hot streak, winning 10 out of their last 11 games. Their three games above .500 for the first time since June 2014 and Conley said he isn’t surprised. “You look at our lineup, on paper we’re as good as any lineup in baseball…we’ve had games where everyone’s seen what we’re capable of.”Christian Yelich

The Diamondbacks however have hit a bit of a slump. Losing six in a row while scoring just a total of 12 runs. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt went 0 for 4, striking out twice and grounding into a double play, lowering his average this season to .232. Arizona pitcher Robbie Ray (1-2) allowed six hits, two runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Offensively for the Fish, Derek Dietrich and Chris Johnson both had two-out RBI hits. Christian Yelich hit a two-run home run, just his third of the season and Giancarlo Stanton went 2 for 3 with a double and scored a run.

The Marlins homestand continues as the welcome the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game series starting Friday night.
