Rays Draft Junior College Pitcher Brent Honeywell

Brent Honeywell Utilizes A Screwball As An Out Pitch

With the 72nd pick (competitive balance pick) the Tampa Bay Rays selected  19-year old Junior College right handed pitcher Brent Honeywell.

The 6’3″” 19 year old finished the season at Walter State Community College in Tennessee with a 10-3 record and a 2.81 ERA striking out 102 in 83.1 innings of work.

He is ranked 195th by Baseball America while Perfect Game ranked him 138th.

Baseball Prospectus ($ required):

The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder has an athletic build with room to add strength. His velocity has increased as the season has worn on, sitting 89-93 mph while touching 95 down the stretch from a short stride and quick arm. His breaking ball is a below-average offering, while his changeup has average potential. His out pitch is his screwball that is tough for scouts to evaluate because of how infrequently he uses it.

I am a fan of all sports but am most passionate about baseball. From the fanatical to analytical, nothing about the game escapes me. Being born and raised in Northeast Ohio I'm very familiar with the heartache and pain that sports can bring and hope that I bring some understanding of the other side to my coverage. I will focus mostly on baseball but also cover the Tampa Bay Lightning, one of the most electric franchises in all of sports. Always willing to converse about any sport and have only one rule and that is be respectful at all times.
