NY Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is the best defensive player left in the playoffs

He is the sole survivor on the Island.  Revis Island, of course.

Thinking about the players and teams left, there are a lot of good defensive players on four very good defensive teams.  In a league where the offense had seemingly jumped ahead, concluding last year with New Orleans and Indianapolis in the Super Bowl, this year is back to being about the defense.

All 4 defenses rank in the top ten in the league.  Got me to thinking, if I was drafting, who would be the first player I’d take off any of the 4 teams right now.  Here is my top 10.

10. LB Bart Scott- Emotional leader of the Jets defense.

9. LB LaMarr Woodley-  Woodley became the first player in NFL history to record three consecutive multi-sack playoff games for the Steelers.

8. CB Tramon Williams- 3 INT already in these playoffs showing off his top 5 in the league ball skills.

7. DE Julius Peppers- 8 sacks and 2 INT this year for one of the most athletic and versatile defensive linemen in the league.

6. CB Charles Woodson- Speaking of versatility, Woodson has no shortcummings.  He can cover, he can run, he can blitz, and he can tackle.  No wonder he was DEF POY last season.

5. LB Brian Urlacher- What a difference a healthy Urlacher makes for the Bears defense.

4. S Troy Polumalu- Makes as many big plays on defense as anyone in the league, and I’d argue him up near #1 if he was fully healthy.

3. LB Clay Matthews- He was a monster rushing the passer all year long.  Relentless.

2. LB James Harrison- 10.5 sacks and 2 INT this year, but more importantly he can be absolutely dominant and take over a game as one of the most intimidating players in the NFL.

1. CB Darrelle Revis- You just do not throw at him.  He can shut down speed guys, slot guys, and big guys.  Fundamentally as sound and precise as anyone to ever play the position.  Works harder at his craft than anyone and competes with a fury.  Had no picks this year due to lack of opportunity, but when you challenge him…well, check out the highlights.
