I spoke with former San Jose State Spartan linebacker Ryan Goforth as he prepares to showcase his talents to NFL decision makers. Goforth was recently invited to two pre draft workouts with the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers. The NFL hopeful reveals what he can do in these workouts to show NFL scouts that he can be a valuable contributor at the next level.

The 49ers in particular are very thin at linebacker after the retirements of Patrick Willis and Chris Borland. Goforth speaks about the recent trend of pro football stars retiring early as he looks forward to securing a roster spot with an NFL franchise. With growing concerns about football related head trauma, Goforth discusses his philosophy on how to better protect himself while playing such a brutal position.

As a prospect coming from a small school, Goforth will most likely have to make the cut as an un-drafted free agent. Star NFL players such as Kurt Warner, John Randle, and Victor Cruz have gone on to have enormous success despite never being selected in the NFL draft. Goforth talks about his favorite un-drafted player in NFL history and elaborates on what it will take to have a successful career despite facing such difficult odds.

A noted college basketball fan, I also spoke with Goforth about the Duke Blue Devils capturing their fifth ever national championship in basketball. Special thanks to Ryan’s agent Andy Tuitele for reaching out to me and arranging this interview.
