According to Fox Sports Jay Glazer, the Washington Redskins have agreed to terms on a trade with the St. Louis Rams to acquire the second-overall pick in April’s draft.
Per Glazer, Washington agreed to swap first round picks with St. Louis (Redskins were picking sixth-overall) and give first-round selections in the 2013 and 2014 draft, along with an additional second-round pick this year.
The pick will be used to select Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin, III who declared for the draft following his junior season after winning the Heisman Trophy. Griffin answered any and all questions about his height, weight and speed at the NFL Combine as he measured in at 6-foot-2 ⅜ and weighed 226 pounds. Griffin followed it up by running a 4.41 second 40-yard dash and posting a 39 inch vertical leap.
At the combine, Griffin was asked which offenses he’s most familiar with.
“West Coast offenses with Washington and Cleveland, highly concept-based, long verbiage in the plays. But other than that, once you get into a system it’s easy to learn it. I’m not saying I’m going to open the playbook and know it immediately. Once you can get on the field and start going through the routes and the protections that you’re going to have to run in those types of offenses, it comes to you a lot sooner,” Griffin explained.
The Redskins have been searching for a franchise quarterback since the days of Joe Theismann and they certainly believe that Griffin can be that guy.
In a division which houses Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, along with Pro Bowlers Tony Romo and Michael Vick, the Redskins had to do something to compete.
“In today’s game if you don’t have the quarterback you simply have nothing,” a high-ranking NFL scout said. “Teams like Washington and Cleveland and Miami have to do something to get a guy or else they’re wasting time.”
By giving up three- first-round picks and a second, Washington is paying a steep price for Griffin’s services but if he ends up being the franchise guy they think he can be, it will be more than worth it.
