A local politician says it is possible the two teams end up across the state line.
Could the Kansas City Royals and the Kansas City Chiefs names be altered to the Kansas Royals and the Kansas Chiefs? The answer could be yes if Jackson County Legislator Manny Abarca IV is to be believed. The representative thinks that the Major League Baseball Royals ownership and the National Football League’s Chiefs ownership could end up across the state line in Kansas if Jackson County, Missouri cannot come up with funding for a new baseball stadium and a new or renovated Chiefs facility. Abarca, who is the chairman of the Jackson County’s Stadium Improvements Committee, told KCUR television Up To Date that the two franchises were both made offers to move to neighboring Kansas. “We have heard from direct sources that there are serious considerations for a move to the Kansas side,” he said.
Kansas has a Major League Soccer franchise. NASCAR also runs races in Kansas City, Kansas. The Royals owner, John Sherman, hoped that he would have picked out a stadium site either in downtown Kansas City or North Kansas City by the end of the 2023 season. There may be another Kansas City site that is being evaluated by Sherman’s management team. Chiefs owner Clark Hunt wants Sherman to make his decision as soon as possible. “Our priority continues to be trying to figure out a way to renovate Arrowhead Stadium and extend its life,” Hunt said. “Once they make a decision, that will help us with our process as we move forward. If the Royals do decide to stay in Jackson County, that’s going to be an issue that we’ve got to resolve. Our thinking has not changed, I’m sorry to say we have not made a lot of progress since the start of the season, but it is something we are focused on.” The Kansas City stadium game continues.
