Live updates following J.J. Spaun, Collin Morikawa, and Adam Scott- Day 2 of the Sony Open
Finally caught up with this grouping on the tee box of 4. As things stand Scott -3, Spaun -3, Morikawa +2.
Hole 4: Par 3
Morikawa: Collin’s tee shot misses the green right. He will have to get up and down for par. Really nice second shot, leaves himself with a short putt for par. Makes it, the only par of the group.
Scott: Tee shot looks to have landed on the right tier of the green. However it will be a long birdie putt. This putt was not good, may have gotten caught by the wind. Has the longest putt for par of the three. Just missed the par putt and taps in for bogey on 4.
Spaun: Tee shot lands short and left. Catches the lip of the bunker and rolls in. Bunker shot had a lot of spin on it and leaves him with a long look for par. Just misses his par putt and taps in for bogey on 4.
Through 4: Scott -2, Spaun -2, Morikawa +2
Quick Note: I was wrong about the wind it is gusting on the course.
Hole 5: Par 4
Morikawa: Furthest tee shot in the fairway as well. Really good approach just short of the pin. Has the best look at birdie of the bunch. Makes the birdie putt. Big for him if he’s going to make the cut.
Scott: In the fairway but a bit of an awkward lie . Good shot online just short of the pin. Just missed the birdie and was upset about it. But he taps in for par on 5.
Spaun: Shortest of the three and in the first cut of rough. Went after the pin but missed just left and will have a chip out of the heavy rough. Good chip will have a good chance to save par. Spaun’s par putt is actually outside of Morikawa’s look for birdie. He misses this par save and is now +2 through his last 2.
Through 5: Scott -2, Spaun -1, Morikawa +1
Hole 6: Par 4
Morikawa: Tee shot bounces left out of the fairway into the thick rough. Very good shot from where he was to the middle of the green. Good lag putt, taps in for par.
Scott: His drive minds the middle of the fairway. Really good second shot has a great look at birdie. Makes the birdie look on 6.
Spaun: His drive is in the middle of the fairway as well maybe 2 feet from Scott’s ball if that. Good approach but will have a long putt at birdie. Misses the birdie putt and taps in for par.
Through 6: Scott -3, Spaun -1, Morikawa +1
Hole 7: Par 3
Scott: On the backside of the green will have a solid look at birdie. His birdie putt misses and he will tap in for par.
Morikawa: Really good shot looks to be pin high to the left. Birdie putt misses and he taps in for par.
Spaun: Good shot to the middle of the green will have the longest look at birdie of the three. Ran it by a bit and has a comebacker for par the he sinks.
Through 7: Scott -3, Spaun -1, Morikawa +1
Hole 8: Par 4
Scott: Longest drive of the group in the right side of the fairway. Approach is pin high has a good look at birdie. Missed his birdie putt and he is frustrated with himself. Does tap in for par after.
Morikawa: Drive found the left side of the fairway. Solid approach long if the pin and has a downhill putt for birdie. Misses his birdie putt and taps in for par.
Spaun: Misses wide left will be hitting out of the thick rough with trees in his way. Second shot found the bunker, not the worst case given where his tee shot ended up. Doesn’t technically end up on the green after the bunker shot. Will have a putt off the fringe to save par. Makes the par save to stay inside the cut line at -1.
Through 8: Scott -3, Spaun -1, Morikawa +1
Hole 9: Par 5
Scott: His drive went the furthest but is on the far right of the fairway. Scott puts his within a makeable range as well. Meaning three eagle putts coming from this group. Scott drills his eagle putt.
Morikawa: Morikawa’s drive finds the left middle of the fairway. His second is great as well. He will have a good opportunity at eagle also. He runs his eagle putt by, but taps in for birdie.
Spaun: His drive finds the middle of the fairway on the easiest hole on property. Big opportunity to get back on track. Really nice second shot will have a good look at eagle. Just misses his eagle putt and taps in for birdie on 9.
After 9: Scott -5, Spaun -2, Morikawa E
