Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of January 15 – 21, 2024. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.

Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

James Montgomery – Barry
Senior – Forward – East Rockaway, New York

Montgomery is selected Player of the Week for the second time in 2023-24 following a pair of double doubles in conference wins. The East Rockaway, New York forward started the week with a 23-point / 14-rebound performance as Barry defeated Florida Southern, 116-112, in double overtime. At Tampa, Montgomery poured in a game-high 21 points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds, leading the Buccaneers to an 84-78 victory. Montgomery totaled 44 points by shooting 44% from the field (15-34) and 58% from the free-throw line (13-19). He averaged 22.0 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 blocks, and 1.0 steals while playing 35.5 minutes per game.

Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Adren Roberts – Barry
Sophomore – Guard/Forward – Greenacres, Florida

Roberts earns Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording the first triple double in the SSC this season and leading Barry to a pair of conference wins. The Greenacres, Florida, guard/forward opened the week with his triple double performance following 10 points, 10 rebounds (six defensive), and 10 blocks as the Buccaneers defeated Florida Southern, 116-112, in double overtime. It stands as the second triple double in Barry history and the ninth in NCAA Division II this year. His 10 blocks against FSC are tied for the fifth most by an SSC athlete in a game. Roberts added eight points, eight rebounds, two blocks, two steals, and an assist to his stat sheet during an 84-78 road victory against Tampa. The sophomore averaged 9.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 6.0 blocks, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 steals for the Buccaneers while playing 35.5 minutes per game last week.


Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

Morgan Kane – Nova Southeastern
Grad Student – Forward – West Jordan, Utah

Kane collects Player of the Week by averaging a double double in NSU’s two conference games last week. The graduate student from West Jordan, Utah, led all players in points (25), rebounds (14), and blocks (2) during a 70-54 Sharks’ victory over Eckerd. In a 75-53 road win against Saint Leo, Kane scored 11 points while pulling down a game-high eight rebounds. She totaled 36 points by shooting 56% from the field (10-18) and 84% from the line (16-19). Kane averaged 18.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, 1.5 assists, and 1.0 steals for NSU while playing 31.5 minutes per game last week.

Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Lauryn Vieira – Eckerd
Senior – Guard – Haute-Savoie, France

Vieira claims her third Defensive Player of the Week honor in 2023-24 for her performance across two conference road games. The guard from Haute-Savoie, France, tallied four steals and two defensive rebounds as the Tritons fell, 70-54, at Nova Southeastern. Vieira swiped four more steals and tallied five defensive rebounds in Eckerd’s 71-70 win at Palm Beach Atlantic. Offensively, Vieira scored 23 points, dished nine assists, and pulled in three offensive rebounds last week. This week’s accolade is the seventh Defensive Player of the Week of her career and the eighth total conference weekly award. She moved into a tie for second most SSC weekly awards among Eckerd athletes and a tie for fifth among SSC women’s basketball athletes.


Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Inigo Marina – Nova Southeastern
Junior – Malaga, Spain

Marina is selected Swimmer of the Week after leading Nova Southeastern to a 174-86 dual meet win against Florida Southern. The Spaniard was victorious in three individual races: 100 Breaststroke (55.22), 200 Breast (2:01.51), and 200 IM (1:52.11). Marina’s time in the 100 Breast surpassed the NCAA “B” provisional cut time. The junior also led his team to a win in the 200 Medley Relay (1:30.91).

Women’s Swimmer of the Week

Emily Trieschmann – Nova Southeastern
Junior – Lake Worth, Florida

Trieschmann grabs her fifth Swimmer of the Week nod of 2023-24 following a 185-76 dual meet victory over Florida Southern. The Lake Worth, Florida product took first in the 1000 Free (10:11.47) and 500 Free Style (4:56.16), surpassing the NCAA “B” provisional mark in both races. Additionally, Trieschmann led NSU to wins in the 200 Medley Relay (1:45.87) and 400 Free Relay (3:32.00). The weekly award is the eighth of her career, which places her second most in SSC women’s swimming history.
