The South Florida Bulls head to Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday afternoon to take on the UAB Blazers in Week 6 of the 2023 college football season, so we bring you the best USF vs. UAB betting pick along with the latest odds update.

The Bulls opened as 2.5-point favorites for this American Athletic Conference showdown, but it quickly moved to South Florida -3.5 with a total of 69.0 points. USF meets UAB for the first time since 2004 when the Bulls defeated the Blazers 45-20 as 17.5-point road underdogs.

South Florida eyes its third straight W

The South Florida Bulls improved to 3-2 SU and ATS on the season following a 44-30 victory at the Navy Midshipmen in Week 5. USF upset the odds as a 3.5-point road dog, outgaining Navy 435-330 in total yards. Freshman quarterback Byrum Brown led the way for the Bulls, throwing for 338 yards and three touchdowns, while junior wideout Sean Atkins had four catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns.

“I told the team they can’t take a breath, many of us as coaches have to get better and the players have to get better,” South Flordia head coach Alex Golesh said. “We didn’t coach well enough these first five weeks, myself included in that. I’m as hard on my staff and myself as anyone in the country.”

Back in Week 4, the Bulls outlasted the Rice Owls 42-29. They were listed as 3-point home dogs, and Byrum Brown went off for 435 yards and two touchdown passes. He also scored once on his own, while junior WR Naiem Simmons had a monster game, posting eight receptions for 272 yards and a touchdown.

USF is scoring 30.2 points per game (63rd in the nation) on 434.4 total yards (39th). On the other side of the ball, the Bulls are giving up 28.2 points per contest (86th) on 398.0 total yards (93rd). They rank 122nd in the nation in passing yards allowed (279.6 per game).

UAB hopes to snap a four-game skid

The UAB Blazers (1-4; 3-2 ATS) are coming off a 35-23 defeat at the Tulane Green Wave in Week 5. The Blazers extended their losing streak to four games, though they did manage to cover a huge 22.5-point spread. UAB was barely outgained in total yards, 448-434, and won the turnover battle 2-1, but the Blazers blew a six-point lead from halftime, scoring just three points in the second half which caused head coach Trent Dilfer’s meltdown on his coaching staff.

“I’m regretful about it. I’m a passionate guy,” Dilfer said. “Anybody that’s ever been around me as a player, as a coach, at ESPN . . . I mean, my kids will tell you this, I am a passionate, passionate person. Sometimes, that passion comes out in ways that I am not proud of. And that’s a moment that I am not proud of. One, I wasn’t just mad at that singular coach. We do have headphones on, so every person—22 people—were getting the message that that was unacceptable.”

Sophomore running back Isaiah Jacobs led the charge for the Blazers last Saturday, notching 18 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Junior signal-caller Jacob Zeno completed 27 of his 35 passing attempts for 236 yards, while freshman wideout Amare Thomas had eight receptions for 99 yards.

Zeno has thrown for 1,442 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions so far this term. The Blazers are scoring 27.0 points per game (tied-81st in the country) on 420.2 total yards (52nd) while surrendering 36.0 points in return (126th) on 433.6 total yards (119th). They are giving up a staggering 204.4 rushing yards per game and 5.6 yards per carry.

Both teams have struggled to defend thus far, so I’m expecting to see a dramatic battle down the stretch. The Bulls cannot stop the pass, while the Blazers have been awful against rushing. Frankly, this game could easily go either way, so I’m going with the underdogs to cover a 3.5-point spread.

The Bulls are not a great team when it comes to rushing, and the Blazers’ run D will have a nice opportunity to improve its numbers. Also, UAB possesses enough weapons to take full advantage of USF’s fragile secondary.

South Florida has only won one of its previous 20 games on the road. UAB, on the other side, is 8-2 straight up in its last ten outings at home and 5-1 ATS in its last six contests against the American Athletic Conference.

Prediction: Take the UAB Blazers +3.5 (-110)
