In case anyone needed another example of Tampa Bay Buccaneers incompetence, Sunday afternoon delivered yet another reminder of how far this team has fallen. The Bucs dropped a 20‑17 decision to the Miami Dolphins, losing their chance to clinch the NFC South — but not their season. Everything now comes down to a winner‑take‑all matchup at home this Saturday at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN/ABC.
Turnovers, Mistakes, and a Defense That Couldn’t Keep Up
Baker Mayfield committed three turnovers — two interceptions and a fumble — while Bucky Irving continued his late‑season decline. The defense didn’t fare any better, failing to contain a Miami offense led by seventh‑round rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers. The performance was abysmal across the board.
It’s getting difficult to find new ways to describe such an atrocious football team.
Despite the Loss, the Playoff Door Remains Open
The Buccaneers now sit at 7‑9, but thanks to the Carolina Panthers losing to the Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay still controls its destiny. A win next Sunday at home against Carolina would secure the NFC South title and a playoff berth.
Todd Bowles’ Job Security Under the Microscope
Head coach Todd Bowles has faced questions about his job security since the day he was hired, but this season has amplified those concerns. After going 1‑7 over their last eight games, the pressure has never been higher.
However, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported on NFL Network that there have been no internal discussions about a coaching change. Bowles signed a contract extension before the season, which may be buying him time.
Still, given how poorly the team has played, very few people — on the roster or coaching staff — should feel safe.
From Coaching to Quarterback Play, Everyone Has Disappointed
From Bowles to Baker Mayfield, from special teams to the defense, the Buccaneers have been a massive disappointment down the stretch. The collapse has raised serious questions about the team’s future direction.
Could the Bucs Draft a Quarterback in the First Round?
It’s not out of the question. With one year left on Mayfield’s contract and his performance falling off a cliff after a hot start, the Buccaneers may consider drafting a quarterback early.
If general manager Jason Licht sees a prospect he loves, Tampa Bay could pull the trigger — even if they sneak into the postseason.
A Division Title Could Mask Deeper Problems
Another NFC South title could paper over many of the team’s issues, and the Buccaneers might decide to “run it back” regardless of how the season ends. But the problems are real, and they’re not going away on their own.
It Is Truly a Bucs Life
The roller coaster continues. Tampa Bay’s season now comes down to one final game — win, and they’re in. Lose, and the collapse becomes complete.
