Live Updates from Matsuyama, Bradley, and Spieth Round 1 at the Sony Open

Update 12:55

I finally was able to catchup to the group on the tee box at 4.

Through 3 they all are currently 1 under par

Interesting note: Bradley birdied 1, Spieth birdied 2 and Matsuyama birdied 3.

Hole 4:

Spieth: Missed the green right. The ball is pretty well buried, tough up and down. Not a bad chip, not a great chip either long look for par. Par putt left just short, it’s a bogey on 4.

Bradley: On the green in the middle tier will have a long uphill putt at birdie. Good lag putt, just short, he cleans up for par.

Matsuyama: Got his tee shot to the back third tier of the green, best look at birdie of the 3. Missed the putt just left of the hole and cleans up for par

Through 4: Bradley -1, Matsuyama -1, Spieth E

Hole 5: Par 4 with the pin tucked in the back right of the green.

Matsuyama: In the fairway on the left side. Missed the green to the right will be chipping from the rough. Good chip will have a really good chance to save par. Misses the short par putt, bogey on 5.

Bradley: In the fairway on the left side. A couple yards closer than Matsuyama. Hits the middle of the green in the back will have a putt at birdie. Drills the long birdie putt to move to -2.

Spieth: In the fairway on the right side. Sticks one to the back right pin should have a really good look at birdie. Missed his birdie putt.

Through 5: Bradley -2, Spieth E, and Matsuyama E

Hole 6: Par 4, front middle pin placement

Bradley: Middle of the fairway off the tee. High of the hole will have the longest birdie putt of the 3. Just short on the birdie putt will tap in for par.

Spieth: Right side of the fairway off the tee. Great shot in, pin high just to the right of the hole. Hits the birdie putt back to -1.

Matsuyama: Right side of the fairway off the tee. Spun one back will have a slightly longer putt than Spieth for birdie. Misses his birdie putt short also, taps in for par.

Through 6: Bradley -2, Spieth -1, Matsuyama E

Hole 7: Par 3, front left pin

Spieth: Tee shot wound up just off the green to the left. Went with putter off the fringe and missed it. Cleaned up for par. Update: must’ve missed something on my walk up as Spieth actually bogeyed this hole

Bradley: Tee shot wound up in one of the three front bunkers. Stuck his bunker shot close. Solid chance to clean up for par. Misses his par putt. Bogey on 7.

Matsuyama: Tee shot wound up just left of the green. Tried to chip it in and ran it by, still a decent chance to save par. He makes the comebacker to save par.

Through 7: Spieth E*, Bradley -1, and Matsuyama E

  • Denotes stat correction: *

Hole 8: Par 4,

Matsuyama: An immediate fore right call off the tee on 8. In the deep rough with a tree blocking a full follow through Matsuyama lays up just short of the green. Correction his shot made the green he has a long birdie putt as well. Great lag putt and taps in for par.

Spieth: The only one of the group to hit the fairway. Takes advantage of his position on 8 and sticks one close, great chance at birdie. Misses the birdie putt and taps in for par.

Bradley: Hit a tree off the left side of the fairway. He did manage to find the green from over there but has a very long birdie putt. Ran his birdie putt well by, not going to be an easy putt coming back for par. He sinks it to stay at 1 under par.

Through 8: Bradley -1, Spieth E, Matsuyama E

Hole 9: The most birdied and eagled hole on the PGA Tour since 2003. Par 5

Bradley: Was in the fairway off the tee, has a putt for eagle. Gave the eagle putt a good run tapped in for birdie.

Matsuyama: Missed the fairway left and laid up right. Chipped it close and tapped in for birdie.

Spieth: Not sure where he was off the tee, but he played up right. Chipped it pretty close solid look for birdie. Cleans up the birdie look.

Through 9: Bradley -2, Matsuyama -1, Spieth -1
